‘New Contexts: Contemporary craft in historic settings’

On Thursday the 19th January DMWM ran the event New Contexts: Contemporary craft in historic settings. The seminar explored ways in which makers can work within historical contexts through a range of invited speakers who discussed their experiences and highlighted the variety of opportunities for makers within the heritage sector.

 

Speakers for the day were:

 

Kate Stoddart

Kate Stoddart is an independent curator and also works for the National Trust on contemporary art development projects. She is currently working on a major commission for the National Trust at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire and previously curated the commission ‘Dark Materials’ at Tattershall Castle, Lincolnshire.

 

Laura Baxter

The established jeweller Laura Baxter has worked on several projects for historic settings, including a large scale commission at the Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed house at 78 Derngate Northampton, as well as recently undertaking a residency at the National Trust’s Clumber Park. For the museumaker project she worked at Bowes Museum in County Durham producing a temporary commission, as well as a collection of limited addition jewellery for the shop.

 

Linda Florence

Designer Linda Florence produces bespoke hand printed wallpaper and installation artwork. She has worked on a variety of large scale heritage projects including ‘The House of Bling’ a 50 metre carpet drawing cut into the grass of the National Trust property, Tattershall Castle and a 20 metre drawing on the floor of the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield.

Trust New Art initiative

The National Trust is  working in a new partnership with Arts Council England to connect more people to the historic buildings and sites  through contemporary art and craft. By placing high-quality and innovative contemporary art and craft within historic settings they aim to inspire artists and audiences and encourage new ways of looking at the work and the world. As part of the programme artists will be supported to make work that resonates with its unique surroundings.

 

Meadow Arts

West Midlands based Meadow Arts commissions and sites new art works and produces temporary context responsive exhibitions throughout the region and beyond. Since 2004 it has been operating on a peripatetic basis, working with a variety of host venues and locations, usually highly regarded heritage sites, historic gardens or public spaces with an established visitor base. This helps create new audiences, encourages partnerships between the contemporary arts, heritage and public sectors and provides opportunities for vibrant education and engagement programmes.

 

Public Art South West

Public Art South West is an information site which provides guidance and examples of public art practice from around the UK and internationally, including case studies in heritage settings. There are many useful case studies as well as downloadable handbooks on the site.
