The Museums Sheffield Metalwork Design Award 2010Building on Sheffield’s rich history of metalwork and cementing the city’s reputation as a centre for metal innovation, the Museums Sheffield Metalwork Design Award 2010 opens for entries this autumn. Sponsored by Sheffield Forgemasters, the £10,000 prize will be awarded in October next year to the UK’s very finest example of contemporary metal design.
The Museums Sheffield Metalwork Design Award was established to showcase the talent and creativity of artists and craftspeople working with metal in the UK. In 2008, the £10,000 biennial prize was awarded to Cameron Maxfield for his Tea Bag Pot, a stunningly original revision of a classic designed object; the tea pot. Cameron’s work epitomised what the award is about; bold, imaginative and contemporary design which signposts the future of UK metalwork.
This autumn, Museums Sheffield is issuing the challenge once again. From 2 November, design proposals for the 2010 award will be invited from professionals, amateurs and students working across the UK in the hope of testing their ‘metal’ before a panel of judges, including The Duke of Devonshire, Director of the Crafts Council, Rosy Greenlees, and Corin Mellor of David Mellor Design
The deadline for draft proposals is Wednesday 31 March 2010, following which the judging panel will select a shortlist of 12 makers who will be invited to realise their designs. These short-listed works will go on display at Museums Sheffield: Millennium Gallery in October 2010, before the winner is announced at an award ceremony later that month.
The winning entry of the Metalwork De,sign Award 2010 will join the Museums Sheffield Metalwork Collection, classed as a Designated Collection by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for its national and historical significance.
